• MATH Priority Standards

    Standards for 3rd involve multi-step problems

    Multiplication/Division 0 - 10. Single digit mastery, remainder, multiples of tens and multi-step word problems. Student should be able to recall facts in less than 5 seconds per prompt

    Fractions - halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths - whole and equivalent with mixed and improper.

    Strong rigor in Place Value Concepts in base ten math up to three-digit addition/subtraction, stacked addition, use of zero in tens and hundreds place, along with rounding & estimating of sums.

    Understanding of terms prime, composite, area, perimeter, and the properties associative, distributive, and commutative.

  • READING

    The focus for 3rd is mastering the ability of learning what a true reading level is, being able to identify and choose materials at or above their level, and knowing when choosing below, are able to explain why they chose the material.

    Reading Journal will normally be expected  Mon-Fri each week. Template is on website and located in their journals.

    In class Lesson Focus: Novel studies, Fiction/Non-Fiction materials, read aloud, Reading Hives with peer feedback, independent reading, and Walk To interventions. Fluency, Comprehension, and Vocabulary acquisition are daily components.

    Materials used will be CKLA (Amplify), IXL, Wordly Wise Book 4, and supporting materials for phonics, grammar, and parts of speech.

    Teacher Read Aloud (TRA) is currently: D.A.T.A . series book 1 followed by Eerie Elementary Book 1 . Both are available on the links page.

  • WRITING

    Expansion of writing a short response paragraph of 50 to 100 words with a focus on sentence structures to an expanded essay-based prompt using a graphic organizer for Opinion, Narrative, and Informational. Range is in the 250 to 750+ words with a multi-paragraph essay format.

    Being able to edit work, edit work of others, use a rubric, and use technology to produce finished product.

    A culminating Autobiography will be written to end year

  • Research Journal

    To start the year the students, share elements of their summer. A topic is chosen for additional research.

    Student start year by identifying ways to locate research answers - person, internet, video, books, etc.

    To start year students will normally write verbatim from source. As we progress, they will learn proper notation for source, and end year using their own words to summarize information learned.

    The students collect that research and share the next day. From that share another connecting topic from the student led conversation is selected, and the process repeats itself.

    This data collection will then be used for presentation projects they choose from their journals in early December, early March, with a culminating project in June.
